Connor

Connor

Key Worker: Mike

Client Background information and why they chose Talent Match

When I made contact with Connor regarding the Talent Match Project, Connor was sofa surfing and unemployed. Connor was in receipt of JSA and looking for work. Connor was not receiving any additional support and did not have any direction in terms or focus. I spoke with Connor and how Talent Match could support him in achieving in all areas of his life. Connor was pleased to have been told this and said he would like to join Talent Match.

Client Journey with Talent Match

Connor has been on Talent Match for just over 1 year. At the start of our journey Connor's needs were immediate housing with a secure tenancy; his main goal was to become a youth worker as this was his chosen career path. But first of all Connor just wanted to work and had no preference to this as his said he just wanted to ‘earn money’. Along side of this, Connor asked if I would be able to help him get into some youth work based courses and after this, help him onto his level two youth work course.

Conclusion

So far Connor has achieved secure housing through YMCA Worcestershire (1 year). Work experience with Batchley Chip Shop(3 month), Gained employment with Iceland (6 months) and attended the below courses:

  • QCF Level 2 First Aid at Work
  • The Basics of Good Youth Work
  • Food Hygiene Level 2
  • Basic Drug and Alcohol Awareness
  • Using Art in Youth Work Activities
  • Dealing with Challenging Behaviour
  • An Introduction to Young People's Mental Health
Since the above, Connor has achieved employment as a sessional worker (youth work based) with Batchley Support Group. Connor is also due to start his Level two youth work very soon. Connor was able to achieve all of this with the support of his Talent Match Key Worker, but most of all it was his determination and focus that has enabled him to succeed all that he has to date.

Connor is now on a steady path that will help him on his way to becoming a professional youth worker. Connors life has improved for the better and he now feels that he has the potential to achieve any goal he sets himself. Connor now experiences a routine, which is something he never had before and he now has responsibilities in his work and home life that he is proud of.

Client testimonial

At the start of talent Match, I was in a bad state, living with my ex-girlfriend and unable to look for a stable career path. I found myself just living day to day life of JSA (Job seekers allowance) “Existing” if you like. Mike contacted me via Talent Match Facebook chat and told me all about the Talent Match scheme. We began working together and over time I was able to move forward and work towards my goal of becoming a “Professional Youth Worker”.

Since starting Talent Match In October I moved into the YMCA Gordon Anstis House, feeling settled I started to look for work. So far I have worked at Batchley Fish bar and Iceland’s, I have gained a great variety of qualifications and much more. I am Currently working for Batchley Support Group as sessional worker, which is youth work based.

One of the amazing rewards from working in a youth work natured job is I am able to build a standing reputation in youth work my ultimate career goal, I am particularly excited as I am due to start level two youth work soon.

I would just like to thank Mike for helping me to become the person who I am today, it is much appreciated.

Lauren

Lauren

Key Worker: Tracy

Client Background information and why they chose Talent Match

Lauren came to me unemployed and unsure about how to get into work, particularly within the field of working that she is most interested in. Lauren met me through St Basils when she became homeless, I explained what Talent Match was and Lauren thought it would be a great opportunity for her to start working with me to try to get her into work.

Client Journey with Talent Match

Lauren has been with Talent Match for two months now. Lauren’s main goal was to get into a career that involves working with animals. We are on our way to achieving this goal through getting her various work placements at places that Lauren has shown interest in.

So far, Lauren has gained some waitressing and customer service skills on a work placement at the “Green Room Café” in Worcester. Lauren has recently started a work placement at “Dodderhill Equestrian Centre”, we are also looking into receptionist work placement at a local veterinary practice.

Conclusion

Lauren has gotten some work experience, she has gained confidence in herself and she can now travel on public transport alone which she previously couldn’t do comfortably.

Lauren was able to achieve this through working with people in a professional environment and pushing herself to do things that are out of her comfort zone.

Since Talent Match life for Lauren has become easier, she feels more comfortable in situations that would previously have made her uncomfortable, Lauren now feels like her career life is slowly moving in the right direction.

Lauren now experiences a lot more confidence in herself and her abilities, she is particularly looking forward to finding the right career for her.

Client testimonial

I feel much more positive about moving forward and getting myself into work. Setting goals and trying to reach them has given me motivation, not only to get myself into employment but in regards everyday life. I like that the support I receive from Tracy is one to one, we can focus on me, my goals and getting me work experience so I am prepared for work when I am employed.

Tracy also liases with my work coach at the job centre which is useful as I have two people supporting me on my journey to employment. Overall I enjoy working with Tracy, she gives me motivation and pushes me to do things out of my comfort zone which has improved my confidence immensely.

Ollie

Client: Ollie

Keyworker: Kenny

Client Background information and why they chose Talent Match

When Ollie came to Talent Match he was 24, new to Worcester city and was at the time suffering from mental health issues. Ollie was confronted with challenges on a daily basis and was living a chaotic life style with no stability or sense of direction. He came to talent match for additional support in moving his life forward and for guidance in progressing areas such as personal development, education and employment.

Client Journey with Talent Match

Ollie has now been on Talent Match for 8 months. Ollie has engaged very well, dramatically improved his lifestyle and general outlook for the future. Ollie’s main goals were to boost his self-esteem, improve his mental health and all around well being. He also set goals for wanting to achieve steps to improving his passion for art and to move towards future employment.

With these goals as a primary focus much of our efforts were centered on preparing for Ollie to get back into education through the use of motivational activities that would help improve his mental health. Since being on the project Ollie has engaged with mental health services and has received professional help. Additionally his behaviours and dramatic changes in mood are now much more stable.

There is a real focus on fitness and the positives exercise can have on someone’s mental health. As a result Ollie has received gym, and fitness lead sessions. Fitness has now become a prominent part of his life and is one of his main outputs for stress relief. Ollie has excelled at this, to the point where he has completed a half marathon and is due to complete his second. Ollie has engaged with volunteering aspects such as becoming an interviewer for the project to pursuing his passion for the arts. Ollie has a great talent for free hand pen graffiti which also acts as a positive output for his stresses. Ollie now attends art therapy workshops on a weekly basis as well as just starting a level 3 course in art at the local college.

Through this journey Ollie did start employment but chose to leave so he could re-enter higher education. Ollie dreams of becoming a commercial artist/designer.

The focus of our support for Ollie was practical based, engaging Ollie in areas which he can commit to and enjoy. Ollies’ improvements have been substantial to the point where he is at a place where he feels he can manage his mental health without the need of additional support from professionals. This is also supported by mental health professionals. Ollie still receives Talent Match support and hopes that in the near future he will able to enter part time work in addition to his college work.

Conclusion

Other than the physical things such has volunteering, education and sporting achievements Ollie has improved his mental health to the point where this is no longer his main challenge.

Ollie is more relaxed, focused and above all in control. These elements have provided Ollie with the freedom and belief that he can achieve his dreams and have the freedom that he can now control his moods and lows and that they will not be a hindrance to his daily activities. Ollie has spoken of having greater self-esteem and a greater view of success for the future.

All of these have all been achieved due to Ollie's drive, devotion and full commitment in engaging with the Talent Match support team.

Client testimonial

"I was depressed when I first got on to Talent Match. My relationship with my Key Worker has pushed me to gain and build back up a healthy relationship through physical exercise (running and cycling), which has overall given me a higher level of self-esteem to help battle my depression appropriately. I have been going to Art groups at an art workshop in the city which has made me mix with the right people and given me confidence and self-belief in my art and design. This has made me want to strive towards my dreams and focus a lot of my time into art which I have been told is also something that I am good at and should continue pursuing.

The one to one support works very well because it feels personal in a positive way without it being too demanding and off putting”

Olivia

Olivia

Keyworker: Amanda

Client Background information and why they chose Talent Match

Olivia was living at The YMCA when she first joined the Talent Match Project. Olivia self-referred onto the project after hearing positive feedback from a friend who was being supported by another Talent Match Key Worker, Kenny.

When I first met Olivia, she was very low in confidence and seemed to be at a standstill in her life, lacking direction of what she wanted to do in the future. Olivia found it difficult to believe that she would be employable because she had a previous conviction which she saw as an overwhelming barrier.

Olivia chose the Talent Match Project knowing that there was a female keyworker available initially. Since our first meeting we have developed a great working relationship built on trust and understanding.

Client Journey with Talent Match

In the 6 months that Olivia has been a Talent Match Client she identified that she wanted to go back to college to complete her NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing, gain business skills to help her prepare for self-employment and she wanted to move out of the YMCA into shared accommodation or a flat of her own.

Olivia has achieved so much in her time with Talent Match, having been accepted in to college to complete her NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing, which will commence September this year. Olivia has also attended four interviews for various jobs and has been successful on three of these work placements, including sales experience, hairdressing and more recently full time employment working at a Pub serving food and drinks.

Olivia has also moved into shared accommodation, through the help of Talent Match and The YMCA where she is a lot more comfortable. This achievement alone has made Olivia so much more confident and has empowered her to be driven and self-motivated.

I have always worked with Olivia at her pace, our working relationship has been built on trust, honesty and good communication. We constantly re-evaluate what is and is not working and problem solve together as a team.

It has been important to Olivia that we work on an informal basis, this makes it easier for her to feel that she can discuss anything with me in confidence and that she will have my support for as long as she needs it.

Conclusion

  • Olivia secured a placement at college: creating a support plan; ordering lost certificates & identification; setting up meetings with the college; getting references from former tutors; going through the application process & interview and applying for student loan.
  • Gained work experience: pro-actively seeking employment, handing out C.V’s and talking to various employers.
  • Become employed full time: taken on as work experience placement prior to full time employment.
  • Gained confidence: one to one support and guidance throughout, regular meetings, solving problems together.
  • Olivia is so much more independent and now has the tools she needs to manage day to day life, she can communicate using a confident approach, and she now knows that she can ask for help when she needs it.
